Freska Produce International Gets Fair Trade Status

Freska Produce International is now Fair Trade Certified, gaining certification with growers in the Mexican state of Oaxaca earlier this week. And as the year goes on, the company noted, Freska will continue to work on getting all of its other growers in Mexico Fair Trade Certified as well.

“Some of our retail partners approached us about helping lead our category into Fair Trade certification and we felt it’s about mutually beneficial relationships and was great timing to get this going for Freska,” said Partner Jesus “Chuy” Loza. “Fair Trade is something that we feel is our responsibility. By offering Fair Trade, consumers can be confident that the workers who produce our products were treated fairly along the way.”

Fair Trade is a phrase that signifies more than you would realize, Freska explained in a press release. To the mango and avocado provider, the distinction means its products are produced according to rigorous social, environmental, and economic standards, so each consumer can have a positive effect in the lives of workers all over the world through purchasing certified products. With the added certification, each mango produced in Mexico from Freska Produce International will bear the logo of Fair Trade.

In essence, Fair Trade helps ensure basic human rights for farmers and workers, and allows farmers and workers to earn extra money with every sale. This move provides Freska an opportunity to deliver the benefits of trade more broadly, and Fair Trade, with its focus on inclusion and empowerment, shows that trade can, and must be, more equitable for all involved.
